Joe Strummer by Roberta Bayley - March 1980

The iconic image of the late Joe Strummer by Roberta Bayley.

Joe Strummer by Robeta Bayley.

The location. 328 East 14th Street. As of about a year ago. A fire demolished the restautant.

I found this photo on Google Images. It was the best angle to match the original photo and the store. The photo was taken for Time Out Magazine by the photographer Beth Levendis. Thank you, Beth and Time Out.

JOE STRUMMER OF THE CLASH IN FRONT OF SAL'S BARBER SHOP, EAST VILLAGE, NYC, MARCH 1980. . . Photo by Roberta Bayley . . .Location: Sal's Barber Shop at 328 East 14th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue

. . . A variety of stores would follow Sal's in this space, the most famous being Artichoke Pizza, which later had a fire and moved across the street. The store is presently empty. . .This photo was taken during a day-long photo session along the streets of the East Village from East 5th Street and the Bowery to East 14th Street and Avenue C to accompany a proposed article on Strummer in Playboy, according to a book entry by Roberta. Many other outtakes from the session - turned into PopSpots - can be seen below.

. . .This search took PopSpots correspondent Marie Fotini of France and me 5 years, as the clues were difficult . .The main clue was the name "Sal's" in the window - and the second was the reflection of the windows across the street. The third was that it was probably between 5th and 14th Street as determined by the outtakes.

. . Since there was no "Sal's Barbershop" listed in Manhattan phonebooks of that era, 2 years ago I photographed the names all the barbers in the 1979 Manhattan phone book at the NYPL for us to search through. What turned out to be "Sal Barbarshop" was listed as "Canfarotta Sal," something we did not catch at that time. . .But recently, while searching through Google Images, Marie ran across a new outtake from the session taken on 14th Street (It was on Alex Smith's blog titled Flaming Pablum). So she went back to the phonebook and looked for any listing on 14th Street - and she found Sal's name and the 328 West 14th St address.. . . Using Google Street View, we then confirmed the location by matching the windows across the street. . . .To see the space in Google Street View, click here: here .

1979 Manhattan Yellow-Page Telephone book. Because it didnt have a "barber shop" in the name, we figured at first it was just an owner's LLC address. It turned out to be "Sal's Barber Shop."

Confirming the exact spot. Matching windows in the reflection across 14th Street.

OTHER PHOTOS TAKEN BY ROBERTA BAYLEY OF JOE STRUMMER THE SAME DAY WHICH GAVE US THE GENERAL VICINITY OF WHERE THE PHOTO WE WERE LOOKING FOR WAS LOCATED.

The photo session began on a roof on a building on St. Mark's Place between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. The dome of the St. George Ukranian Catholic Church on on 7th Street between 3rd and 2nd (across from McSorley's Ale House) can be seen in the background.

Joe talks with two people on a sidewalk in Cooper Square (approximately East 6th Street and Bowery, west side of street.).

NOTE: AFTER I POSTED PHOTO THIS I FOUND OUT THAT THE ORIGINAL SHOT WAS FLIPPED HORIZONTALLY ON THE WEBSITE I GOT IT FROM.

SO, INSTEAD OF JOE BEING ON THE WEST (FOURTH AVENUE) SIDE OF COOPER SQUARE AT ABOUT 5TH STREET, HE'S ON THE EAST SIDE of COOPER SQUARE - (WHICH IS THIRD AVENUE) AT ABOUT 5TH STREET. SEE NEXT PHOTO. . .

Until I go back to the spot to get a street level shot, this should tell you where Joe is. I have somemore research to do on this to be 100% sure, but for now, both fire escapes seem to match, which would place Joe just north of East 5th Street on Third Avenue.

The only brick building still existing on that block is #25 THIRD AVE, which seems a few doors down from where Joe was. We will look his exact position. To see that building, and the general angle of Roberta's photo, in Google Street View, click here.

Joe Strummer holds a book with the title "Power" outside of 328 East 14th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. This photo that Marie found on Alex Smith's blog "Flaming Pablum" was the third photo of Strummer on 14th Street, leading Marie to look in the phone book for addresses there.

The book Strummer is holding is called HOW PEOPLE GET POWER: Organizing Opressed Communities for Action by Si Kahn (1970, McGraw Hill). (Thank you Clash fan Don Whistance (www.theclash.org.uk) and the Clash Facebook group for this information)

Joe leans on a metal pole in front of Sal's Barber Shop at 328 East 14th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. The store would later become the famous Artichoke Pizza before being gutted by a fire in May of 2017 and moving across the street.

Joe holds down his hat from the wind at East 14th Street and Avenue C near the Con Ed plant.

Later the photo session goes uptown to the De La Concha Tobacco Shop at 1390 Sixth Avenue near 56th Street where Joe seems to check out some pipes.

Somewhere along the line, Joe buys a pack of cigarettes from an unknown vender, location unknown.

The famous mural of Joe Strummer in the East Village at East 7th Street and Avenue A created by the artist Dr. Revolt, who also designed the logo for "Yo! MTV Raps." The mural was sandblasted off once, but has been recreated by the artist.
