  PopSpots - DYLAN - LSD - 1966 - Barry Feinsein

This famous series of shots by Barry Feinstein of Dylan discovering a funny background for a photo were long said to be from Sheffield, England, as Dylan and his band and film crew drove between Leicester and Sheffield during his 1966 World Tour.

Upon closer inspection, the photo turns out to be taken in Nottingham - a city on the road between Leicester and Sheffield, and famous for its proximity to Sherwood Forest of Robin Hood fame.

Ironically, if Dylan's group got a speeding ticket, it might have come from Sheriff of Nottingham - Robin Hood's nemesis.

Note the number 18 over the door.

The address turns out to be 18 Castle Boulevard, Nottingham, England where the shop called la Petite Galerie is in this photo from Google Street View..

This map shows the general route the Dylan entourage followed going from Leicester to Sheffield.

(As reader Mark Makim later sent in: "The reason he was in Nottingham is that, at this date, the M1 motorway was not completed, so he would have followed the main road which was the A46 from Leicester to Nottingham; and then he would have gone via Alfreton and Chesterfield to Sheffield." Thanks, Mark)

This chart shows that the picture would have been taken on May 16th 1966, since they probably stayed over in Leicster, then drove in the daytime to Sheffield.

The name of this store in the background helded us find the address. I worked on this via e-mail in conjunction with Marie Fotini, PopSpot's Chief European Correspondent.

Here's the address of Pickfords - #16 Castle Boulevard. The LSD store was #18.

Just to double-check we like to matchup background photos. Here are some matches from across the street.
